We are currently staying at the Vineyard campgrounds on Lake Grapevine in Grapevine, TX after staying at the Texas Motor Speedway for several days and attending the NASCAR races.
During the trip I had noticed that grease was leaking out of the outer CV joint boot. After cleaning up some of the grease I could see a small hole in the boot. So, I had a question for the GMC forum if anyone has used some sort of adhesive to temporarily plug a hole in one of these boots.
I have a spare inner and outer boot but no tools with me to remove the axle.
So, I went to the local Autozone to find a quick boot / split boot replacement. No luck. But around the corner was an O'Reillys Auto Parts. O'Reillys carried the boot but wasn't in stock at the store but he could get one from the warehouse in about 3 hours.
I ordered 2 of these and now have a spare. These cost $17 each and look to be a much better boot than the OEM replacements. The rubber is thicker, more pliable and larger with more folds to accomadate the turning of the joint.
The instructions say the boot can be changed in 45 minutes. The job took me about 2 hours but I wasn't working in a big hurry.
Also, if I was doing this again I would clean the grease off the joint, put the boot together on the the axle and then apply the grease supplied with the boot to the CV joint.
The outer replacement boot part number is 03609 made by Dorman/Motormite.
I haven't found a split boot for the inner CV joint but I would suspect that the boot failure rate of the inner boot is not near as likely as the outer.
We leave Grapevine tomorrow and head to Jackson, MS for a leisurly trip up the Naches Trace Trail.
Anyway, FWIW
