Here is the sequence from the book. I think that they have steps 1 and 3 reversed (I'm refering to the 4 spd auto scenerio):

1 Shift transmission to neutral
2 Shift transmission into drive and make sure there is no vehicle movement
3 Shift transfer case into neutral
4 Turn ignition key to unlocked off position
5 Shift transmission into park
6 Attach vehicle to tow vehicle with tow bar.

If steps 1 and 3 were reversed it would then make sense to me.
I believe the end result is supposed to be transfer case in neutral (test by putting transmission in drive and seeing that it is really in transfer case neutral) and then the trans in Park but steering in the unlocked position so it can track behind the tow vehicle. Is that correct?
