Jim,
I just replaced the tires on my trailer that I use to tow my 1953 Willys Jeep (approx.2300#). The tires I had on it were P235/75R15 105S (passenger car tires). They were rated at 2039# ea. which far exceeded the weight rating of the tandem axle trailer (6000#, same as yours, about 1200# empty). The reason I replaced them was due to age (7 or 8 yrs) and the fact that one of them went flat, and separated in my yard.
I never had any hint of a problem with them in any way. No matter what I pulled the trailer with. there were no handling problems. I have regularly loaded both the Jeep and an FL350 Honda Odyssey ATV (about 600#) on it at the same time.
The new tires are ST225/75R15-D special trailer tires. I got a good deal on them ($70.00/tire). They are specifically made for trailers (hence the ST designation) and have stiffer sidewalls, etc. At a capacity of 2540# per tire, the far exceed the weight rating. Based on my experience with passenger car tires in the past, I would not hesitate to use then in your application. Just what I did.
