I don't know if this has been posted before, but I have discovered another way to remove the side decals, a pressure washer. While washing the GMC yesterday to get ready for winter storage, I was using a pressure washer and hit the decal from a shallow angle. The decal is obviously old and brittle, and just flaked off in minutes. I worked for 5 minutes to remove the entire rear decal, leaving only a small amount of cleanup work which I will use the heated razorblade scraper to accomplish.

I don't know if this is a common trait for these old decals, but it certainly beats lots of scraping.
