Further to my first post on the subject I have appreciated all the
responses received.  Last January, while parked in Vancouver BC with
little to do because of the pandemic, I removed both the starter and the
alternator and presented them to a specialist shop in Burnaby who have
been in business for almost 40 years doing nothing but rebuilding
starters and alternators.  Both items were returned to me looking and
acting like brand new, and in conversation with the shop tech was told
they both presented no complications and the jobs went well.

I therefore will find and install a replacement starter switch on the
steering column and see what comes of that.  Any repeat experience of
the "drama" and I'll go after the solenoid.

It was suggested that I include a geographic location in my post - I am
at my summer residence in the hinterland near Kenora, Ontario which is
about 125 miles east of Winnipeg Manitoba.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions.
