In building engines for way too many decades. I had rebuilt 2 Chevy V8's years ago. That both had roller chains in them for a little over 100,000 miles. There was about the same amount of slack in those two roller chains. As a standard GM chain. With the same number of miles. The sound from a roller chain is higher because of the chain slack that they have from the start. Is the roller chain a good chain? YES. And very good in the applications that it was intended for.
Our GMCs are in the 45-year-old range, And mostly in the 100 to 150,000 mile range. The cam sprocket is the main issue. Not so much the chain. So, if the original chain gave us the service life that it did. Are you still going to be driving that same engine at 90 years old? And at 300,000 miles? Is there anything wrong in putting a roller chain in. A BIG NO. Put in what YOU like. But I don't see a value add for the extra cost.
