OK, the bottom line first: The Oldsmobile 455 is a phenomenal piece of
machinery.

New fuel pump, new spark plugs, new oil and filter and a couple little
vacuum plugs. Primed with electric pump. No leaks, carb filled right up.

Cranked and it started within two revolutions. I let it idle for a few
seconds and turned it off. Started again for a few seconds, rev'ing it a
little. There were a few clacks and clatters. Turned off.

Restarted and let the clatters die out. This engine is running as smooth
and quiet as it ever did, and that was pretty smooth. A little stuff
burning out of the exhaust, but I expect that to subside.

A note to any folks who have been recently acquired by a GMC motorhome
(that's not a grammatical error -- you don't own the GMC, it owns you)
-- if you have to change the mechanical fuel pump, it's a lot easier if
the pump cam is positioned in the "resting" part of its rotation. I
found a photo on the photo site of (coincidentally) Carl Stouffer's
timing chain replacement. The caption said piston 1 was at TDC. The pump
cam lobe was in the right place. I put the pump in place without a hitch
as I had positioned #1 at TDC just to check how it lined up with the
distributor. I was afraid the timing chain had slipped a cog. If you
have to fight the spring pressure of the pump arm against the cam,
you'll come away with a substantially embellished vocabulary.

On the advice and thoughts of everyone who responded to my question
about plumbing the electric pump around the mechanical, I'm leaving it
as is.

After changing out this dose of new oil and filter and a little more
engine bay clean up I'll get the front tires back on tomorrow and maybe
head out for a little spin.

Thanks everyone. Did I mention that the Olds 455 is a phenomenal piece
of machinery?
