Long story longer, had a overheat stall out on the road from Tucson to LA in Feb. have been swamped away from home at work until the virus hit and sent me back to Tucson. About done with the honey do list and will be tearing into the coach Saturday. Carl S has recommended an engine shop in town to checkout and freshen up the heads, i've checked around and https://www.larrysengine.com/ is the real deal. Springfield ignition has block of plates / gaskets and choke conversion parts in the mail. Dick recommended
"In either case consider having .020 milled off the heads while they are being “freshened”.
Reason is the oem gasket was .017 thick (no longer available) ---all replacement head gaskets are composite that crush to .038 so you lose .021 .
The advertised compression was 8.25 ---I and the late Joe Mondello have never seen one cc’d that made it to 8.00 :1
By milling the . 020 you can get back to stock dimensions –the pushrods can be reused---the preload on the lifters will be correct (provided the valve job is done with correct “even” height ; and most importantly the manifold will fit and have the correct port and bolt hole alignment ."
I've gone through the PO folders of receipts etc and it looks like the top end got some love in 1996, and 74960 miles. Belts, hoses, AC replaced, R&R right exhaust manifold, transpan drop and filter change, new air bags and compressor, Major tune up to include rebuilding carb, etc. receipt includes 8 SS exhaust valves and head gasket set. the next owners took this rig apart and redid the interior and paint, all the mechanicals, new distributor, carb, intake manifold, Aluminum radiator, fan clutch, headers and exhaust.
In all of the paperwork it looks like the engine has never left the bay or been separated from the transmission and nothing about water pump or timing chain....
i've got a speed pro CTS-3113R that can be set up -4, +4 or straight up. My harley has a headquarters 0034 that i put in +4 to get the torque in earlier, is that a better option for the stock GMC Cam? when the engine is happy again and the travel is easier Ive already got a 370 final drive and reaction arms sitting with Miguel at MGM. About to pull the trigger on a water pump, the FlowKooler looks to fit the bill, American made, high flow at lower RPM lightweight.
So while I'm in there what else should I be looking to repair / replace?
