$100 to $300 buys all the self leveling sealant and elastomeric coating material you need to coat the top of a GMC. That said, don’t do it until you remove the top rails and properly reseal under the rails like GM did 40 years ago when our coaches were new. Once that is done, then coating the roof with elastomeric will have many benefits. Elastomeric materials are commonly used in high heat areas as a roof coating on commercial buildings and school buses. We have that on our building and on the top of our Prevost. If we still had GMCs I would do them as well. Has a big positive impact on temperature and sound inside and really does make water leaks a thing of the past.

Note that there are many products called roof coatings. The one you want has a viscosity about like honey and sticks to everything, including you and any clothing/shoes you wear while rolling it on. It normally requires a primer coat be applied first that will adhere to metal, wood, fiberglass, rolled roofing, torch down roofing, plastic membranes, plastic or metal pipe, flashing and just about anything else. Forget about cleaning this stuff off the roller or your clothes.

I purchased from National Chemicals in Florida in 5 gal tubs for our building. What you find in home stores is often more like white water and I would not recommend that stuff. So, insist on seeing the material yourself before buying. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on application thickness and number of coats.

Saw a GMC that had the roof done in Line-X or a competing product. Painted the roof the match the body color. From the ground, looked okay. A great
total non-skid surface. GMC was or is owned by Dolph S. A great guy and good member.
The companies that advertise in FMCA magazine want $4K for their roof treatment, just in case you are wondering.
