I am 2 years into ownership of my GMC Coach and it is time for me to
drain the transmission fluid, replace the filter and restore it to
service. I also wish to drain the final drive and give it fresh oil. I
am not a mechanic but I do manage to change the engine oil, rotate the
tires and cope with roadside failures reasonably well.
The transmission filter kit I have from WIX (P/N 58882) includes a
rubber gasket. The gasket I removed from the transmission pan today was
fiber, and seemed to have no gasket dressing on it at all. (This may
have explained why I had a continuous weeping of transmission oil and
wet pan exterior.) I have cleaned the pan gasket face and note there
are lateral scratches like glacial striations faintly visible. (This
too may have contributed to the fluid escape.) I do hope to achieve a
dry transmission pan exterior when this job is done.
My question for gmclist is this; Will I be pleased, or will I regret,
using gasket dressing on either or both sides of the rubber transmission
pan gasket? A supplementary question in a similar vein concerns the
Felpro fiber gasket I have to install on the final drive pan/housing.
Yes or no to gasket dressing?
The gasket dressing I thought I'd use is Permatex Anaerobic Flange
Sealer and Gasket Dressing.
