Update (Saturday 7/14, 1am)

Thanks to Don, Jim, and Randy, amazing gentlemen with saintly patience who walked me through a whole day of diagnostics, we finally traced the final issue to a blown Electronic Injection Control Module (ECM), which Don had a couple spares of, and after a10pm trip to his shop, I was able to plug in the new ECM, after swapping out the engine-specific chips. After all that work, it started right back up again!

Not to say that mounting a battery backwards didn’t do much more damage. But in the process of debugging, we found plenty of blown fuses, not just in the fuse box but in all kinds of inline lines, and a dead distributor control module.

In other words, don’t mount batteries in reverse, and keep an eye on those technicians who do it for you! (And yes, having conversation with Walmart customer relations about compensation for all that got busted due to their mistake.)

Mainly though, I want to thank all three Valiant and Very Patient knights-in-shining-email who spent hours on the phone with me. Certainly a round of beers next we meet! But it is also a great introduction to the dedicated people in this list who are willing to drop everything they had planned that day to help out those, like me, who had no choice but to end-up with an up-ended day. Theirs was a choice, and one I very much appreciate!

I learn a TONtoday, knowledge I hope to one day return!

Update (Wednesday 7/17)

Yesterday, I planned to drive it up to Don Virta's shop so he could look at the systems to see if anything else was affected by the incident, and to just take care of things any new owner should take care of (fluid changes, bearings check, belts, etc.) and on the way there the engine died three times. After finally coaxing it to start ( after 5-10mins of nervous, stopped in the middle of busy rush hour traffic on phone with Don trying 101 different things) I limped into his shop and after about 1hr of poking around, looks like I need a new isolator, possibly distributor / alternator, and unrelated to the battery issue, the usual fluid changes, and the other things a new owner should just do to start from a good baseline. At least the green pickle is where someone who know what they are doing and has the right tools, and getting it there didn't involve a paying hundreds of dollars for an 18-wheeler tow...

As to Walmart, yep: I'm reaching out to them for compensation for the costs associated with fixing their mistake.

Cheers everyone!
