Highs been have been in the 90's or high 80s for days. On top of that my home AC quit so I have been outside in the sun working on it for days. I do not understand why things always break on me. This system is only 35 years old and it broke twice in the past week. I wish I knew this when I bought it and I would have bought and installed a different brand.
First thing that happened is 240 volt power cable inside Seal-tite armored / waterproof sheath between the house and compressor the burned completely in half. After chasing down and rebuilding with some 10 gauge wire and new Sealtite, I redesigned the attachment and installed the new wire with new Sealtite. It is almost in possible to find real plastic covered steel seal-tite these days. I completed that job on Sunday morning and enjoyed AC for about 4 hours
Then it got warm again. This time the evaporator/ compressor fan quit. In trying to remove the fan connections I managed to destroy the rusted fan and compressor starting capacitor. So where to get one on Sunday. Answer nowhere. So on Monday the best I could find was to order one for Thursday delivery. That was unacceptable. I finally found a place that had two separate capacitors of the correct value in stock. I chased that down after 70 mile round trip and decided to wait until it cooled off the next morning to install them.
Next morning guess what? still no motor function. So off it came and sure enough I found that one of the windings was open. I checked of several HVAC supply places and no one had this GE unit any more. I finally found a Dayton brand one from W W Grainger that could be made to work with some minor modifications and wiring changes. I chased that one down (another 70 miles or so round trip) and waited for cooler temps this morning. Mean time I could not get the fan blades off of the old motor. So I had to take another 25 mile round trip ride to use the hydraulic press at the airport.
At 5:30 AM at a cool 79 degrees I started installing this new assembly. I finished about 9:00 AM just as it started getting hot again. I'm now enjoying temperate inside weather. I took a drive to Sam's Club this afternoon and it was 97-98 o9utside during that trip today.
I think I should move to Georgia. Colonel Ken keeps telling me it is nice down there. It is only suppose to be 90 here tomorrow (July 4) and Thursday. At least my AC is working.
