So it turns out that I have a '17058253' carburetor, which appears to be a for a 77-79 BOP car 403. It's a car carb, so I will replace it with a '17038254' or EFI. The distributor is the correct 1103267.

Funny -- when I opened the hatch I immediately spotted a big snake that was curled around the carb. I took a video as I removed the air cleaner. He went around the back of the carb then curled up around the fan clutch, where the curious little guy stayed watching me very intently. He appeared to be much more interested in GMC repair than my friends and family, so I explained Quadrajets to him while I worked.

Even when I spun the fan around to try to get him to go down from the engine, he kept coming back up to watch me for almost the whole time. I say almost, as when I was trying to photograph the part number on the distributor, he came back up over the top of the engine, right over my arm, back around the carb -- staring at me the whole time -- then zipped up the radiator hose out of sight. I think he may have gone into my airbox, as the fan resistor is out at the moment, so I'll have to pull the fan out and make sure he doesn't get stuck in there.

I don't mind snakes at all, but I did find it very unusual that he seemed so unafraid. I looked up PA snakes and it seems to be a copperhead! Can any of you GMC'ers ID a snake from a video and a couple of pics? I don't mind if he stays around eating mice, but I will have to remain vigilant that he might be hiding somewhere, and to open the hatch to check for him before I start the engine.

-Dave
