On both of our coaches I found it advisable to check them every two to three years. The most common failure was water leaking past the shaft seal and taking out the motor bearings. Second most common was the supposedly brass studs corroding to nothing and coming loose. I ended up putting the twist on connectors on both to make them easy to remove even while on the road. The various pieces and mounts seem to interchange across a variety of brand so I just kept searching eBay for low cost new units to keep a working spare on hand in both coaches. I think the last ones I bought were around $30 so it was a no brainer. Never had a problem once the working spares were on board! Be sure to keep a valve closed between the tank and the macerate except during use to make sure no water can leak past the shaft seal.
