About 5 years ago while parking my Birchaven I managed to hit a curb and scar up my shinny Alcoa wheel. Determined to find an early warning system, I made my own curb feeler by combining two 10.5 inch curb feelers into one 21 inch long curb feeler. The new curb feeler is mounted about 20 inches above the ground on the forward edge of the front wheel well, and the tip sweeps along about 6 inches above the ground. By using this extra long design, mounted much higher than the usual short curb feeler, you remove false alarms caused by bottoming out - that simply does not happen.
The result is an early warning system that not only saves the expensive Alcoas, it also provides time to take corrective action on narrow bridges and other areas where the roadway sometimes gets unexpectedly tight. I've had these hand made curb feelers on my coach for five years and they've helped me avoid close encounters countless times. I've also finally found a supplier that provides the items necessary for me to make these extra long curb feelers, so they will very soon be carried on the Applied GMC website for sale.
