Jim is absolutely right, our 1800 rpm, four pole Onan generators can’t be beat for longevity and relatively quiet running, when they are running well. And, if you get them off the diet of todays crap gas they will run well and also likely will outlive the current owner, the next and the one after that, as well.

At the GMCWS Coos Bay, OR, rally in a couple of weeks I will show you how you can run your Onan on propane or gas at the flip of a single toggle switch. No matter whether the board works or not, no matter what you or the PO might have done to the wiring, if your Onan starts and runs at all now - even poorly - it will start and run far better on propane. Yet you still retain the ability to run it on gasoline if you ever want/need to.

I have been working with one of the leading manufacturers, US Carburetion of Sommersville, WV, for several months now to put together the right combination of components for a system designed just for our Onan generators. My design allows everything to install using existing stock mounting holes and it should be easy enough to install that even those of you who feel “propane challenged” will be able to do it yourself. The system works like a charm and requires no modification to the Onan. I will offer the presentation materials to all the clubs right after the Coos Bay rally.

Nope, I have no financial involvement with this, just happy to find a way to greatly extend the useable life of our Barbarians. No need to change generators unless something is physically broken inside your Onan.

That is a fantastic 1800 vs 3600 RPM comparison Chris.

The rotational speed difference and its consequences for noise and engine longevity are two of the most important reasons that I think the Onan is worth maintaining. The simplicity of the engine and the generator design are the other factors that are equally important IMO.
