FMCA and the insurance company are working this issue as we speak. Seems it came up once before earlier in the summer elsewhere and it caught everyone by surprise. The bottom line is not a refusal to pay on the part of the insurance company, it is the service they use of truckers all over the country who came up with the idea that their members did not want to drive motorhomes older than ten years. The insurance company is apparently perfectly willing to pay the costs for someone else to be flown in who is willing and able to drive an older motorhome so long as the FMCA member makes those arrangements themselves. That is in direct conflict with the language in the policy itself which, as Faye Curtis quoted, says the FMCA Assist program will arrange for and pay for someone to come in and drive the older motorhome back to the member’s residence.
No need to hash this out further here. It is a real catch 22 that FMCA and the FMCA Assist insurance carrier will have to work out. I spoke with FMCA Assist this morning and they were caught as much off guard as our member is at the moment. That person has escalated it up within FMCA Assist. I also spoke with our FMCA NW Area VP who is escalating it up within FMCA. BTY, the FMCA NW Area VP was caught off guard earlier in the summer when the first such issue came up as their coach is older than ten years. IIRC, about half the FMCA National Board and Officers drive motorhomes older than 10 years so lots of high level motivation to get this fixed.
In the mean time, I think it wise for all our GMC clubs to put together a list of club members willing and able to fly in and drive a distressed member’s GMC back home. It looks like they would be reimbursed for all costs plus perhaps $100 a day for their efforts, but we need to wait to see how this all sorts out. In the mean time, Jackie and Paul are in good hands with friends at the scene who will wait this out with them. I will report more when I learn more. For all of you with military backgrounds, this looks like a FUBAR if I ever saw one!
