I just had the second call for today from a stranded GMCer.
His first call described a failed ignition coil. Installing the new spare
he'd bought several years ago didn't help. He was awaiting receipt of a
replacement ignition module. He wanted to know if I could think of
anything else he should be suspecting. We both figured the shorted coil
had taken out the module, so I couldn't help.
The latest call informed me that the ignition module didn't help. But
re-installing the "failed ignition coil" DID! Turned out, the module WAS
the problem, but to confuse things, his long-depended-upon spare coil was
BAD!
The big lesson here is one we tend to forget: When buying a spare, ALWAYS
install it and let the known-good old item become the spare. Especially in
these days of dubious quality control, it's a very important precaution.
