Today I replaced the last of my fluorescent tube light fixtures with LED tube style strip lights that mount into the same fixtures in my studio. The LEDs are better in every way, brighter, half the power consumption, 10x the life, but more expensive - which is fine by me. The purpose of this note is an observation I made while smashing those last florescent bulbs in the garbage can, face mask on, gloves on, mask on, etc. In my multi-decade career in technology management there was always one key element that impeded the adoption of a new, replacement technology. In the case of florescent tubes it was trying to figure out how to perfectly coat the inside of a thin glass tube with phosphor of the correct color to emit the light we wanted when excited by the plasma inside the bulb. Took quite a while to figure out how to do that cost effectively. By the end, the cost was nearly zero.
So, that got me to thinking what else will be displaced in our lifetime. There must be a baszillion miles of 48” and 96” florescent tubes still in use all over the world. But, before long they all will be long forgotten. My nostalgia moment for the weekend. Tomorrow it is back to powering the Onan in the Clasco by propane with a $100 kit. I still need to find the correct on/off solinoid valve for propane that I can power from the fuel pump circuit so I can start and stop the propane Onan from inside.
