Yup, the idea came from you, Gene.

The company estimates the Onan will consume about 0.8 gal of propane per hour running full tilt. The most common scenario for us to run the generator for a couple of hours per day when dry camping which we rarely do for more than a couple of days in the Clasco so 10 or so gallons of propane in the Clasco will be plenty for our normal use, if this Onan with the nuked board will really start more easily on propane than it does on gas. Time will tell and I will let you all know. When we do extended dry camping it is in the Royale which has 460 amp hours of battery capacity (lead acid wet cells) where the Clasco has less than half that capacity with a single 4d AGM. You can run the AGMs further down before recharging than you can with the wet cells so the net difference is not as great as the numbers imply, but that is just how we operate with two coaches at our disposal.

I am also interested in seeing the difference in run noise and smell. I was pleasantly surprised by how the ugly alcohol gas smell at start up decreased when I put the FiTech EFI on the Clasco. If I can reduce the Onan ugly alcohol gas smell it will be worth the effort. I know I could just “fix” the Onan running on gas, but what would be the fun of that? Besides, it is only $100 to try this propane idea and the reversion back to gas is trivial.

We leave for Alaska in the Royale the first of May and will be wandering around the north land by ourselves for a good part of the summer so not sure how much certainty I can find with the propane conversion before we go, but I will try to get some good idea. The Onan in the Royale will continue to run on gas until I can get comparative data from both these Onans. If Gary Bovee allows me to report these differences at the four club GMC rally at Coos Bay, Oregon this October, I will do so.
