Update on my saga to get a 1973 GMC 26 from North Carolina to Massachusetts:

The original plan was for the current owner to drive it up from NC to Springfield, VA where we would meet up and I would drive it home the rest of the way.

It did not make it to the the rendezvous yesterday. It kept kicking out of gear. At first he thought it was the linkage, but adjusted it according to the maintenance manual and the problem persisted. This morning when he opened it up this morning to see if there was a simple solution on the inside the transmission fluid came out black. This is a rebuilt trans with less than 3,000 miles. He changed the trans fluid just before leaving and that fluid looked fine from the first 2500 miles on the rebuild.

I've rented a car and am on my way down to Madison, VA to the transmission shop he is having it towed to.

If the transmission is toast are there any of Manny's transmission staged for emergency use on the East Coast? If so, what's the going rate for one?

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
