Ouch, Rob! So sorry you have to go through this trauma. For years the power tool industry has turned a blind eye to the very real dangers posed by rotary power saws (AKA table saws). The lack of a riving knife to prevent the rear of the blade from contacting the rear edge of the blade causes serious injuries from what is called kickback. In fact, a narrow cutoff piece that impacts the rear of the blade can be thrown back against the operator at a speed surpassing that of a cross bow bolt. The lack of a top blade cover, or one so inconvenient to use that most users remove them, can cause serious finger damage in the blink,of an eye. The lack of a sliding table forces the operator to push the workpiece past the rapidly rotating sharp blade via ones very vulnerable pinkies. But, worst of all, reliable technology exists that will stop the blade when it does encounter flesh so quickly that little if any damage to the operator occurs. Why hasn't the industry embraced these finger saving technologies? Because to do so might expose them to liability for the very dangerous designs they have been foisting off on the North American market for decades. Long ago the European market banned such designs and mandated sliding tables, riving knives and convenient blade guards that are nearly always in place. They are rapidly embracing the instant stop technology as well. My hope is your finger will heal quickly without undo pain for you.
