Hi KB,

I found Deralle (sp?) fan assisted oil coolers to work well for either engine or transmission oil coolers. The area just to the left of the radiator works well. I recommend changing the battery to an AGM which requires no maintenance and sliding it further away from the radiator to make room if necessary. I use 2' x 2' puzzle style anti fatigue mats to duct the air to the radiator on both sides, then also to duct air from the left most part of the grill to the external cooler. You can either bypass the radiator cooler and use only the external cooler or plumb it in series and use both. The external cooler fan is thermostatically controlled to come on at 170. On the Royale, this external cooler is used to replace the damaged radiator transmission cooler and I hear it run for several minutes when shutting down after in town driving on a hot day. On the Clasco the external cooler is plumbed in series with the radiator engine oil cooler and I seldom ever hear it come on.

We are still in MX with limited email access so can't send any pics at the moment, so let me know if you would like some later.

I'm preparing to do an engine rebuild quite soon so need to figure out
how to do an external oil cooler and exactly what parts are required.

I've searched the discussions here on the topic but haven't
found anything definite on the bypass question so far. Seems like
if there is a bypass with a 40 year old spring or such and you add an
even longer oil cooler path, you might have problems. So is there a
need or a way to fix the bypass to work with an external cooler?

Any consensus on adding a cooler with an integrated fan vs a passive cooler?

Also, just the simple plumbing question of how to get around
the radiator to an external cooler. I thought of getting longer
hard lines made so the ends reach closer to the back of the radiator,
and then using the existing flexible lines to the new cooler.
Has anybody here done that? Any other suggestions on how to accomplish
the task?

Any tips or suggestions on specific coolers or parts would also be appreciated.

thanks,
Karen
