Actually it is all metric now. 18mm (0.71) is a bit less than 3/4” and 20mm (0.78) is a bit more. No intent to fool anyone, just to standardize sizes around the world. In the US they just round up to 32nds or even 64ths to get inches. In tools these days most all are built to a metric standard and then marked in inches for the US market. Lead screws are changed to produce inch movements but that is about all. All we need to do is follow the rest of the world and ditch this screwy inch business….. It is sooooo very much easier and far less error prone to work in metric.

Keep in mind that modern plywood has been converted to 'nominal' sizing --which translates to "they've shaved a couple of mm off of it but still call
it 3/4." In the building trades, a sheet off tar paper is required to level a butt joint between old and new.
