Emery,
The API base specifications are a reflection of engine/vehicle
manufacturers' requirements. They include, among many other parameters, the
items you mentioned (i.e., heat tolerance, viscosity stability, etc.). Few
engine/vehicle manufacturers are brand-specific in their guidance to owners.
API service classifications and viscosities are specified as conditions of
warranty coverage, including requirements for synthetic lubes (I have two
vehicles with the latter requirement).
It is 56F and partly sunny today at my Alaska summer location (in mountains
about 100 miles south of Anchorage).

I agree with what you are saying about the API but Isn't the API class a
minimum specification? That is that two different oils might have one just
meeting the spec and perhaps the other one exceeding the requirements of the
spec?
Differences might be heat tolerance, viscosity stability,, etc.
Are you in Alaska for the summer?
