Rob,
Two different-labeled oils with the same API "donut" are refined to the same
specifications. And "both would lubricate your engine the same".
Any difference in chemistry of API spec oils is at the margins.
National/international refiners and marketers, in an effort to differentiate
themselves from one another, claim that certain proprietary additives to the
API spec product make their product superior to their competition. There is
no credible documentary evidence to support such claims over regular API
spec oils.
Re the old Castrol commercial, "oils ain't oils", there IS a lot of cheap,
poor quality oil in the marketplace. None of that can be labeled with the
API "donut". That, then, is why it is vitally important to "look for
the...label". Here is a link that defines the API quality labels (be sure to
click on "API Motor Oil Guide" in red in the link):

Fred,
After reading your email I came to the conclusion that if two oils have the
same API "donut" and are the same API Service
Classification would the have the same "chemical" makeup or could one be
superior to the other.
It seems to me that if they both were the same both would lubricate your
engine the same.
Or was the old ad correct "oils ain't oils."
Regards,
Rob M.
