We are so blessed to now have a great running new engine in both our coaches. The Royale is a bit ahead of the Clasco in terms of miles on the engine and has the larger non-climb over bed so we took that one on our last jaunt to granddaughter graduation, our 55th wedding anniversary, my wife’s sister’s 50 college reunion, meeting up with the east side GMC Cascader bunch at Farragut State Park on Lake Ponderay in northern Idaho, and a gathering of old philanthropy buddies from Spokane, WA. A really great time.

One interesting GMC anomaly. For several years, about once a year the Royale goes through a restart process where it will not turn over after stopping. Turn the key and nothing happens, no click, no anything. I have changed out the starter motor more than once, by-passed the neutral safety switch, wired a push button straight to the starter solinoid, etc. with no change in behavior. All the rest of the time it starts quickly hot or cold but on these few occasions there is simply no one home. It happened going up the Columbia River gorge on this trip. Stopped at a rest stop and nothing when we tried to start up again. Waited an hour or so and it started right up. Sounds like heat soak, but why only once in a great while? We had Jim Hupy make arrangements with his starter rebuilder in Salem to do one of his special heavy duty units with real copper in the solenoid and I put it in today. This time I also changed out the battery and all the cables, and ran the positive directly to the starter and the negative directly to the engine block. Maybe these changes will eliminate this irritant.
