Preemptive decision. Old engine ran just fine but lost a lot of oil from somewhere that I could not find. So, we decided to put in another S&J based on the positive experience we have had with their engine in the Royale.
Jim H. started on it just after Thanksgiving so hopefully he will be through the initial run in this week. I hope it does as well as the S&J in the Royale. I would hate to break the "if it ain't broke, don't fixe it" rule and not have a really outstanding outcome. We initially wanted to have S&J rebuild that specific engine as it had never been apart before. But, S&J did not have a build slot until about now and we were hoping we could get south by January 23 to meet up with the Saguaro Jet Setters in Casa Grande for their Pick'n and Pluck'n rally. In late November S&J did have a 455 they had just built to GMC factory motorhome specs (same cam grind, .030 on the bore and .010 on the crank) so we had that one shipped to Jim H's place in Salem for him to do the R&R along with an alum radiator, alum water pump (supposed to be higher efficiency) from Jim K. Jim H. also locally sourced an alternator and starter rebuilt by someone he knew in Salem, along with all new hoses a
nd belts. So, everything that moves on or interfaces with the engine will be new. We should not have to worry about trash in the engine oil cooler lines since the engine was running well when we drove it to Salem.
Once we get it back from Jim H. I will post progress. Our plan is 500 miles around northern Oregon where it is flat, change out the Joe Gibbs break in oil for Delo plus GM EOS for the gentle run back to souther Oregon where it is definitely not flat and the run south to snowbird in AZ and MX for a while. We will change the oil again at about 3500 miles and then likely go with syn from there on.
