I needed to make a quick decision on some studded drive tires for the GMC this past weekend. After a bit of research I went with the Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2. (Usually I would have selected Michelin or Goodyear)
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2 is a directional tire with a unique tread and stud design. Apart from grip on ice, my main concerns were noise when on dry pavement and handling.
For those considering a snow/ice tire, here is my experience....
Traction was excellent on both snow and ice . At normal highway speed there was no increase over the usual road noise levels that my Michelin LTX produces.
Perhaps the most surprising experience was that the GMC handled better, there was less tendency to wander when highway driving . The tire also provided a softer ride.
I would attribute the changes in handling and ride to a combination of the directional tread pattern and a softer tire compound. The trade off will come in tire life.
If your in need of a winter tire you may want to consider this option.
Oh... and our Football Team (Edmonton Eskimos) lost in the CFL Semi-Final's ... but the 6 hour round trip to game in the GMC was a great time !
