I've often recommended the great Australian on-line auto magazine
AutoSpeed. Here's an example of why:

This issue we have a brilliantly cheap and simple system for hearing
detonation while tuning. You'll need to provide a good quality pair of
earphones or headphones but other than those, the system will cost you
under ten bucks.
Does it work? It sure does - incredibly well in fact.
And not only can you use it to detect when detonation is occurring, you can
also monitor the operation of closed-loop blow off valves, hear when
injector shut-off occurs on the over-run, and even listen for odd gearbox
or idler bearing noises. With mine I can even hear the syncho rings
engaging in the gearbox!
