When we looked at these retro-Winnies at FMCA in Redmond, OR, a short time ago the interesting features were on the inside. It is always nice to see what a major manufacturer uses to solve all the problems of adding function that a customer will like but at the lowest possible cost to keep the retail price down. For example, they designed the overhead cabinets with sliding doors rather than hinged doors. What appeared to be a custom aluminum extrusions formed the structure and the slide track and the doors were a simple rail and stile with a translucent plastic insert for the panel. Same basic treatment for the kitchen and bath storage areas as well. Gave the interior a very Euro look while being inexpensive to make, hang and replace if something gets damages while on the dealer lot. The kitchen and bath sinks and faucets were also interesting pieces that would scale well for our GMCs. Colors were light red/brown wood tones on the little bit of wood that shows, light
beige headliner, wall coverings and seating with darker beige carpets and a garish bright yellow strip for accent on the window valences and seat backs. Overall illusion is of a lot of room inside a short box. Because everything is so square and box like It also has a very functional kids bed that pulls down from the ceiling over the drivers and passengers seating. Good overall industrial design if you like modern bread box.

My guess is the retro-Winnie design cost was a fraction of what GM spent designing the living spaces in our GMCs. GM started with 75 engineers including human factors specialists, interior designers and period color experts - as many people assigned to the design and interior as to the chassis and drive train by most accounts. They mocked up dozens of floor plans and then invited 50 women motor home owners from around the country to critique those mock ups before settling on the hand full of original interior designs.
