Could someone remind me again why a combiner doesn't act like a Boost Switch when the engine starter switch is engaged.

I am going to run a garden tractor battery to start my genset and I don't want the draw from an engine starter to kill it. Or should I always start the Genset and then use it to supplement the engine battery if needed. Or, thirdly should I just have separate battery cutoffs and bring them on-line manually?
