Hi Rob,
Strangely the answer is both -- with LTE service the phones have a SIM card but it is still locked to Verizon in most cases. That is how reseller services like the one WallyWorld sells can work both on the ATT (which is GSM) and Verizon (which is CDMA) services. My Nokia N8 was unlocked and had a SIM card, for example. Point of clarification - I just bought a Samsung S-4 Active to replace my S-2. It has the same specs as the S-4. It takes a SIM and
is a GSM phone.
Somewhere I read that Verizon uses the CDMA system are the S-4 phones you have CDMA or GSM?
