Hi Gary,

This response is not directed at you or your comments with which I completely agree.

I did want to add to the discussion the role that lower gearing plays in both the uphill and downhill scenario. We always talk about how we can climb hills better with lower gearing, however the most important thing from my experience with two coaches is the importance of that lower gearing while going downhill. On our recently completed nearly 4000 mile snowbird jaunt I commented that I never needed to shift into second gear going up or DOWN hill yet never felt any hint of stressing the coach or lugging the engine. On the downhills I could use my six wheel disk brakes on the Royale to modulate the speed, but the 3.67 gearing kept it well in check on all but the steepest grades. I don't have as much experience with that same gearing on the Clasco with stock brakes, but what I have experienced is the same phenomena. The gearing keeps the speed in check so well that there is little danger of overheating even the drum brakes. So, from my experience, I would suggest starting
every discussion of braking with gearing.

I was at Manny's yesterday and asked him about this thread and his thoughts
on the downshifting problem. He told me to not downshift at anything over
45 mph and to use the dickens out of the brakes to control my downhill
speed. He and I are both really glad that we have disc brakes all around
after we both have experienced complete loss of drum brakes coming down the
Grapevine in CA. I finally understand the EBL/transmission issue.
