On our Royale somewhere along the line the threads in the transmission oil cooler in the radiator became damaged. As a result, I installed an external fan cooled Derail cooler bypassing the radiator all together. Since I had moved the starting battery to the drivers side for weight balance, I installed the cooler standing upright on top of the battery tray at about a 45 degree angle. I also made baffles from puzzle style anti fatigue mats to move air along the passenger side of the radiator and through the cooler. When driving in cold weather I can move one part of the baffle to prevent over cooling of the trans oil temp.

Since this installation the trans temp as measured at the pan has never exceeded 175 and only reaches that fan on temp when coming down from heavy trans load driving to a heavy, slow traffic situation. Then the fan comes on and keeps the oil temp controlled until it cools off below 175 again. I don't miss the radiator trans oil cooler at all.

I know most cooler manufacturers recommend running through the radiator however if I was going to a hot climate I would consider not going through the radiator. I don't know what your coolant temps are down there but I can't imagine much cooling happening at 190 degree coolant temps. Same goes for the engine oil cooler. For cooler climates you can buy a cooler bypass valve that opens up when the temp gets up to about 180f. Don't really have much experience heavy pulling so just thinking. Perhaps someone with more experience can chime in. A torque converter warms things up pretty fast and I would think running through the radiator would raise engine coolant temps pretty fast going up mean hills.
