Several of us use the Happy Campers Stuff.

Some of us use Always Fresh.
http://www.alwaysfreshinc.com/

They are both very good.
You have to start with a clean tank. Rinse and drain several times, then
use the Happy Campers or Always fresh according to their instructions.
I don't bother rinsing after draining after using either of those
preparations. I leave a little to act as a "starter" for the next trip.
I add a little more just before we leave home.

Obviously all Airstream owners don't need to use one of these, because
everybody will tell you that Airstream Folks think their poo don't stink.

Oh, you'll need something. The smell will tell you that after a day in
the hot sun.
Jerry Work has one he swears by that I haven't tried yet. I think it's
"Happy Campers" something...

formaldehyde. Do the chemicals really help break down waste and toilet
paper? Is it more of a deodorizer than anything else? Thoughts?

You don't want the formaldehyde type. You want an enzyme type. Our
system is big enough that you can actual get a colony of good stuff
growing down there and help keep the smell down and break things down a
bit. I've had good luck with Odorlos.
