We came over the Grape Vine (I5 steep climb headed into LA) abut noon today with the same ease I reported earlier in the week climbing Siskiyou Pass (highest point on the I5). 3.67 gearing, the S&J (Spokane, WA) engine now has about 2000 miles, cam timing set 4degrees advanced, Patterson distributor set at 10 degrees static advance. We did the climb in third gear never less than 55 mph, not less than 4 inches of vacuum, water temp below 200, trans oil temp measured at the pan never over 175 ( the kick in point for the fan on the external trans cooler, no loop through the radiator).

I also said I would report on the Archoil fuel additive and friction modifier products that Armand M. Mentioned a couple of weeks ago. It is way too soon to make any definitive observations, but the initial indications are positive. We have had the fuel additive in every tank since we left home. The friction modifier has been added to the generator, power steering pump and transmission. The engine seems to runs more smoothly and the generator also is quieter and smoother than it has been since we owned the coach. This could be due to placebo effect, but I don't think so. Gary Bovee came by when we were parked beside the freeway with the generator running and he also thought the generator was running more smoothly And quieter than one would expect.

When we get back in a couple of months I will tabulate the whole trip fuel consumption and will report results the. So far, so good.
