A while back I replaced the temperature sender, after which the gauge seemed erratic until the engine was thoroughly warmed up. Today while working on something else I noticed something white where the sender threads into the intake manifold. Teflon tape. Without even thinking that the manifold was the ground for the sender I had carefully wrapped the threads in Teflon tape before I installed it.
I removed the sender, cleaned the tape off the threads, and reinstalled it. Gauge works great now.
