I had a problem with the forward / reverse pedals on the hydrostatic controls on my John Deere diesel tractor. They were binding slightly and it would not always come to a complete stop. I traced the problem down to a 6" shaft running through a 6" tube that I had never greased. There was no way to get a grease gun on the fitting without disassembling major parts of the tractor. I decided to install a 90 degree grease fitting.

I removed the old fitting and the new 90 degree fitting just fell in the hole. I tried another 1/4-28 and the same thing happened. I decided it must be metric, so I went to town (22 mile rt) and got some 6mm ones. They did the same thing. So another trip to the store for the next larger size in metric (I had the next larger size in pipe thread which is 1/8th pipe and it is too large.) When I got back I found the 8mm one was also too large.

Now what? I got out the micrometer and start measuring grease fittings. I went through about 100 1/4-28 and 6mm fittings and found three that were slightly larger with tapered threads. All of the rest were straight threads and you can not tell the difference between 6mm ones and 14/-28 ones.

The tapered one worked just fine but I do not know where I got those. I have a tool here for removing and installing grease fittings. It has a 1/4-28 tap on it which is also straight thread, not tapered.

I checked two other fittings on the JD and they were tapered threads.

So off to McMaster Carr and sure enough they had them.

You learn something new on most days.
