I have never really had any starting issues with our coach over the five and a half years we have owned it, but I did suspect the boost system was not in working order. I replaced the chassis battery a year or so ago after finding it to be a little weak, at six years of age, but before replacing it, I tried the boost switch to get a little more power to the starter. It didn't seem to do anything.
A couple weeks ago, I had Kathy come out to the driveway and hit the switch a few times, while I checked the voltage at the solenoids. There was power across the two small terminals when she turned on the switch, but no noise or any sign of solenoid operation at either solenoid. At least I knew the wiring to both was still good and operational.
I ordered a pair of new solenoids from Jim B, along with some new stereo speakers for the new system SHE wanted for Christmas. Along with some very good advice on installation and wiring of the speakers, Jim made sure I actually needed two solenoids for my '75 coach. After reassuring himself that he wasn't selling me stuff that I don't need, he shipped them to me and I received them the following week.
It took less than two hours to install the new solenoids, and only took that long because I took the extra time to thoroughly clean all the hardware and connections as I went along. I took the loose pieces (screws, washers, ground wires) to the wire wheel and made them all shiny, and wire brushed all the rest of the terminals in place.
After completing the job, I had Kathy come back out and activate the boost switch again. This time, there was a satisfying click coming from each of them. It is a good feeling to have this system working at 100% once again. It is a simple job and I highly recommend doing it if your boost system is not operating correctly.
