Airport scanners can be far more sophisticated than just metal detectors, and most these days are. A number of my former staff at the national lab were involved in the development of very high frequency holographic scanning and imaging for detecting nonmetalic flaws in things like the coverings on stealth airplanes after flying combat missions. A lot of that technology trickled down to todays airport scanners. An early test we did more than 15 years ago was to detect plastic Glock hand guns concealed on people. The images were so good you could read the serial number, count the number of shells in the magazine and determine whether one was chambered or not. It would not have made any difference if the shells were metal or not. There is a reason the more advanced scanning techniques require software blurring of parts of the human body to maintain some semblance of privacy whether there is metal present or not.
