Just completed a three-week trip through Nevada (Highway 50 really is the loneliest road), Utah, Arizona and back to California with no problems. The engine noise I was concerned about before we left hasn't changed much, if at all. Might be just a touch louder and a little less like metal-on-metal. This trip makes it almost 5,000 miles that I've been chasing it. I'll try to spend some time with my stethoscope and a length of hose this weekend and see if I can pin it down.

My problems with a leaky brake fitting delayed our departure by a day but everything worked fine on the road. I'm still not sure why the "flare saver" didn't seal the fitting but the new combination valve solved the problem. I'll send the old one (new in May) back to JimK and see if he can figure it out. It seems to require a good deal more pedal force with this new master cylinder than the old one (also new in May) so I may need to check the length of the rod from the booster to the master but I've got a strong right leg so it probably won't happen right away.

I experienced some mild vapor lock on the two-day run home from Phoenix. Temperature wasn't that hot (maybe 85 in AZ the first day and 75 or so coming up the Central Valley in CA the final day) but every time I stopped for a break or a long signal the engine would stumble pulling out. Never died and ran fine once it got some cooler fuel in the lines. I've had that happen on really hot days in city traffic but was surprised since it was relatively cool. I added an electric fuel pump to the winter project list.
