This morning I sit thinking about the long line of veterans in my family. One of my grandfathers is buried in the Confederate Cemetery, in Columbus, Ms, where he was killed. His son fought at the same time and lived through the ordeal but was left with a mangled right arm, til he died in 1912. I enjoy visiting his grave in a little country Cemetery between Hamilton and Hackleburg, Al, as often as I can.
I appreciate those that I can read about who have served our country, but I love knowing so many living veterans. Wonder why so many seem to own GMC motor coaches? The conventions always honor our veterans. So many stand when called to do so by the Moderator. I remember the first time being at a place where veterans were asked to stand. I had never considered myself a real veteran because I served our country stationed in Mississippi, instead of some place across the pond. I was pushed out of my seat by someone else. It felt good. Now, many years later, it still feels good and I love thinking about those who served, and came home, along with those who did not get back home.
So, I am honored to know everyone of you folks that served this country in any capacity, giving up your own decision making for the betterment of others.
Life is good because our country has been served by so many. I say " bring back the draft".
