I've been watching and reading the entries that deal with a hydraulic
applied parking brake / emergency brake with great trepidation.
I'm hopeful that what I am about to report on will be taken MOST SERIOUSLY!
Please go to the NHTSA, DOT site for some definitive insight on the matter.
The Code of Federal Regulations of the United States of America - Page
211< http://books.google.com/books?id=9Zg8AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA211&dq=S5.2+Parking+brake+system.++Each+vehicle+with+a+GVWR+of+10,000+lbs.+or+less+and+each +school+bus+with+a+GVWR+greater+than+10,000+lbs.,+shall+be+manufactured+with+a+parking+brake+system+of+a+friction+type+with+a+solely+mechanical+means+ to+retain+engagement...&hl=en&sa=X&ei=L_IbUvP3EKXr2QXu6oD4Cw&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA>
THE CORE OF THIS POST SHOULD CENTER ON THE FOLLOWING EXCERPTS:
"S5.2 Parking brake system. Each vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or
less and each school bus with a GVWR greater than 10,000 lbs., shall be
manufactured with a parking brake system of a friction type with a solely
mechanical means to retain engagement..."
IN ADDITION:
"S5.2.3 The parking brake system on a multipurpose passenger vehicle truck
or bus(other than a school bus) with a GVWR if 10,000 pounds or less and a
school bus with a GVWR greater than 10,000 pounds shall be capable of
holding the vehicle stationary for 5 minutes, in both forward and reverse
directions on a 20 percent grade"
THESE ARE DESIGN STANDARDS FOR TODAY'S VEHICLES. VEHICLES WITH
GREATER GVWRRATINGS ARE COVERED WITH REDUNDANT
ELECTRO MECHANICAL AND AIR SYSTEMS.
IMHO, THE GMC SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED & TESTED WITH AN
INTERMITTENT DUTY CYCLE IN MIND. IT WAS NOT DESIGNED AND TESTED BE UNDER
PRESSURE FOR A LONG DURATION. IF SO, I'M SURE THAT A REDUNDANT PRESSURE
PATH WOULD HAVE BEEN CREATED TO INSURE INTEGRITY OF BOTH SERVICE BRAKES AND
PARKING BRAKE HYDRAULICS.
JUST FOR GIGGLES, LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF VEHICLES INCLUDING SUVS THAT ARE
ON THE MARKET WITH FOUR WHEEL DISC BRAKES AND A SMALL INNER DRUM WITH SHOES
THAT SERVE AS THE PARKING BRAKE. IN OTHER WORDS ("a parking brake system of
a friction type with a solely mechanical means to retain engagement...")
HOPE THIS HELPS OUR DECISION MAKING!
