Today we left Gordon & Lucie Seykora's place in Nanaimo, BC and moved to
Victoria. Because Saturday night is when they have the big fireworks
spectacular at Butchart Gardens, we wanted to be there. We checked into a
campground 10 miles from the gardens and departed immediately to see the
gardens.
About half way there, the PS pump began to howl. I had a fresh quart of
fluid aboard, so we were under way again quickly, but not for long. The
howl quickly returned. Parked at the gardens, I quickly found the
problem: blown pitman shaft seal.
I drove back to the RV park with little difficulty since above 15 mph or
so, I barely missed the boost. While there are other options, the one that
most appeals to me at the moment is to get on the ferry back to Port
Angeles when we finish our sightseeing here. From there, it's only 72
miles to the Seattle ferry terminal at Bainbridge Island. I can get the
box rebuilt there more easily than anywhere short of there.
Question is, will the pump stand up to that long a trip with no fluid? I
don't mind replacing the pump too, but I don't want to wind up disabled
before I can do so.
Any experience?
Ken H
