I have been using the GMC generator a lot lately at my storage unit and decided to go get some gas before I got down past a 1/4 tank. Normally I would have gone about 7 miles to gas up but the coach was running well and just decided to go into the next town another 8 miles. Got gas and was headed back home when the hunger pains hit. Stopped at a Fast Freddies restaurant for a steak burger. I had to park across the street as the parking lot wasn't big enough for the GMC. I crossed the pavement and as I stepped onto the parking lot there was this storm drain grate in front of me. As I stepped on the grate for some odd reason my right hand let loose of the keys to the GMC and kerplunk down into the drain they went.....out of sight. Something told me that this just wasn't your everyday storm drain as there was a ladder made from rebar along one side. I had a tape measure with me and measured how deep the water was where the keys dropped in. It was seven feet from the top of the grate to the mushy bottom with four feet of water. Home is 15 miles away, the wife is out of state and I don't have another set of keys with me. Since I was at Freedies I ordered my burger, and ate it in the GMC to try and figure out what I am going to do. I thought maybe I could hot wire the GMC and got my MM out and looked over the electrical drawing. After pulling out the connectors half way down the column it occurred to me that I still needed a key to unlock the steering column. Now I thought if I had a magnet I could try and fish for the keys. Lowes was just 1/2 mile back and I found a magnet and 10 foot plastic pipe for $5.20. Sales rep tried to get me to buy a sweeper with a magnet on it for $15.00. Got the magnet attached to the pole and on the second try I found the keys. Took the GMC back to the storage shed, went home, had a beer, and a good chuckle.
