Howdy;

I thought I would start a new thread on engine oil pumps, kind of in reference to the 100# oil pressure dilemma. The Olds pump is a simple gear pump, very dependable and long lasting. Quite a few of the engine rebuilders, I for one, and I also think that Dick Paterson does, are using the high volume pump, for better cooling and more volume, especially for the upper end. The HV pump, for sure the Melling, needs to have some milling done on the pump housing. This is for clearance for the crankshaft counter weights. The standard volume pump will not have this milling done to it, as it is a smaller housing because of the smaller gears, and clearance is not a problem. I have had one Melling HV pump that did not have all the milling done to it, so I needed to use a carbide cutter and remove some casting, not much though.

The photo's I have posted on the photo page have some notes on them to explain a few items. Note that when the pressure regulator valve opens in the pump, because of excess pressure, usually the pressure spring is set for 60 psi, there is an internal port that will be opened when the pressure valve is pushed in, and this routes the oil back into the pump. The oil does not get dumped into the oil pan sump.
