I bought a Maxx fan 4000 from Jim K the other day. It's not the superduper open in the rain fan, it's the traditional looking fan with a white domed top.
I installed the Maxx fan this weekend, taking out the old fan was a big pain in the butt. I don't know how GMC did it but that fan had a flange on top and bottom that we're bigger than the cut out. Using the GMC tool I was able to relieve enough material around the flange to take out the old one.
There was still more cutting to do. The Max fan is square and the old fan has rounded corners so I used the jigsaw to enlarge the hole. That scared the pants off of me. After the first cut all fear was gone and I simply had a hole in the roof.
I picked up a roll of butyl tape from Jim K, put it on the underside of the Max fan, screwed it down through the aluminum and it was in.
This fan is a vast improvement over the original fan. The blades on the original fan have big air gaps. The new Maxx fan is very much like my fantastic fan in that the blades go all the way to the rim, it has 3 speeds, and is reversible. It looks like a high-quality unit.
Now installing a fan in the bathroom shouldn't be such a mystery. So my advice to anyone who's thought about this is go for it, it's a very simple improvement that even shade tree wannabe's like me can do.
