Don't know why all the photos didn't show up. So I'll repost them here and start a new thread on the engine issues.

Motor is OUT. Took a lot longer than I expected and I was glad that my neighbor Beau (BO) offered to help. He's a better engine guy than I am and recently retired so we've been playing a bit more than in years past.

The photo album is here for the email guys: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6382-overhauling-the-403.html

I made a trolley similar to the one in the shop manual. It comes apart into 5 pieces (2 ends, 2 uprights, and the trolley) The metal was a bit rusty so I decided to paint it so SHE wouldn't complain about the nasty metal in the coach... Shocked Laughing

The engine tilter worked well but we should have put the adjusting bolt toward the front.

Then we lifted the engine, tilted the nose up and started picking up the front of the coach until the engine would slide back and the front go down. I set a piece of plywood on top of my pallet jack and let the motor down on that. It was pretty easy to move it around.

Empty compartment....

WAY UP HIGH!

Used some 6x6 timbers sawed into lengths for the lift bracing.

This is my newest acquisition from Horror Fright...an 8 ton air over hydraulic jack. Beats the heck out of pumping the handle. Eased it up a block at a time. Dang jack has a handle and I've got a really good grip but I'd hate to run into the man who can throw that thing in place one handed. Shocked Shocked

When I first started my business, a guy came by my booth up at the Carsile (PA) swap meet that was interested in an English Wheel. He rebuilt forklifts and we ended up doing some trading. Best deal I ever made and it would be one of the last things I got rid of. Here I have just hooked it to the engine tilter.

Up in the air.

Carried it inside and sit it on a special table that Bo likes to use when building an engine. I have a heavy duty engine stand but Bo prefers the table. I put the table under my trolley so we can lift things off easily.

Here is my trolley. It's made from parts of a bridge crane that came from a closed tire factory in town. It has about a 1500lb capacity.

Tomorrow I'll pull the tranny and final drive and start breaking down the motor. Bo will come over and help me measure wear and come up with an action plan.

The removal was considerably more time consuming than I had expected and I was VERY glad to have help. It would have worn me out to have kept going in and out of the coach. I know it can be done alone but two people makes it a ton easier.

I'm excited to see what I have tomorrow.
