When I went to a 100 amp alternator, my single belt would squeal on
startup no matter how tight the belt was. I replaced the pulley with a
double one and no more squeal. That being said, Gene F. and Jim B. make an
excellent point about redundancy with three separate belts. If you can
drive the water pump, you can limp home without either the alternator or
the A/C compressor. There is no need for a double pulley on a 66 or 80 amp
alternator, but a 100 amp, there is.
